     Cross Swamp Methodist Church Cemetery

     Cross Swamp Methodist Church and cemetery can be reached as follows: Take SC64 West from Walterboro, cross US21, next crossing is Stephens Cross Road, turn left on Cross Swamp Road. Approx 4 miles on the right.  There is a sign on the road, but it is easily missed. Turn right approx 100 yards is the church and cemetery.

     This was originally called the Jones and Murdaugh Family Cemetary. It also had a section for the family slaves. The original church was built before 1900 with lumber from Aaron Varn's saw mill.   The picture of Jesse Jones stone is Col Jesse S Jones commander of the24th South Carolina. He was killed in the battle of Franklin Tenn.To the left in unmarked graves are his parents,  John S and
Elizabeth Broxton Jones.
